Mangrove Monitoring Encourages Community to Initiate Patrol Team

SEMARANG – Dozens of fish pond and mangrove farmers attended the presentation of mangrove monitoring results and monitoring training in Semarang on Thursday (07/11/2024). The death of mangroves after being planted due to natural factors and human disturbances encouraged the community to get involved in monitoring the mangroves. The community showed their interest by forming a mangrove patrol team in each region.

BINTARI in collaboration with the Traveloka – WRI Tree Heroes Program has planted 80,000 mangrove seeds in Semarang City and Pekalongan Regency since 2023. Meanwhile, BINTARI has also planted 120,000 mangroves with funds from the Japan Fund for Global Environment since 2022. The monitoring results in August 2024 showed that the mangrove survival rate was 86% in Pekalongan Regency and 68% in Semarang City.

The highest mortality rate in Pekalongan Regency was caused by erosion that carried sand during the sea tidal. Newly planted mangrove can be carried away by waves or buried by sand. Meanwhile, mangrove deaths in Semarang City were caused by disturbances from livestock and crabs. The monitoring results also showed mangrove growth level in between 80% - 110% over the past 18 months. The Avicennea mangrove type showed the highest growth rate with the largest number of branches and leaves. Rhyzophora grows lower with in average 1.2 branches per mangrove.

After forming a patrol team and participating in monitoring training, the community will monitor the mangroves independently and protect the mangroves from any disturbances. MN
