PEKALONGAN – Bintari in collaboration with the Pekalongan Local Government carried out an action to collect and clean up rubbish at Wonokerto Beach, Pekalongan Regency, Friday (12/8/2022). The beach clean-up was conducted along Asri Beach of Wonokerto area and the Api-Api Village mangrove area which reaches a length of 2.5 km. This location is the mangrove conservation program area of Bintari and Friend of the Earth Japan.

This beach clean-up action was attended by 135 participants, consisting of Pekalongan Regency Government officers, fishpond farmers and fishermen, Adiwiyata Middle School and High School students, Undip students, Indonesian army and Police. This action began with a short ceremony led by members of the Indonesian Navy. After the rally, participants were divided into several groups to collect organic and inorganic waste separately.

This activity succeeded in collecting a total of 2.1 tons of organic waste and 800 kg of inorganic waste. The waste is then transported by dump truck to be disposed of at the Bojonglarang Final Processing Site (TPA). Some plastic waste is donated to scavengers for recycling

Chief Executive of Beach Clean-up action, Amalia Al Khasanah, said that thousands of kilograms of rubbish could disrupt mangrove planting. Wood, plastic and foam waste exposed to tidal waves can destroy planted mangrove seedlings. Mangrove seedlings can be uprooted so that they cannot grow or die, disrupting the rehabilitation process of mangrove forests. Amalia added that the aim of this beach clean-up is to educate the public about the importance of preserving mangroves as protection from abrasion and rising sea water due to climate change.

"The aim of cleaning the beach is actually to show the community and the Pekalongan Regency Government that the Pekalongan coast is experiencing many threats. These threats include mangrove cutting, rubbish dumping and coastal erosion. Therefore, after the clean-up action, Bintari Beach will also plant mangroves in the next few months," she said, at Wonokerto Beach, Pekalongan Regency, Friday (12/8/2022)

Meanwhile, Coordinator of the Environmental Disaster Response and Recovery Program (TANGGUH) Moh Nurhadi added that this beach clean-up activity is just an instrument for environmental campaign to protect the mangrove ecosystem. Apart from the campaign, Bintari also planted various types of mangroves on Wonokerto Beach in collaboration with five groups of fish pond farmers. At least 50,000 seedlings are targeted to be planted until March 2023. Apart from planting mangroves, this program is also conducting sustainable livelihood studies with a focus on sustainable brackish water fisheries cultivation.

The TANGGUH program is a mangrove ecosystem conservation program implemented by Bintari and FoE Japan. This program is supported by the Japan Fund for Global Environment and CSR from several Japanese companies. This program is planned to last for three years to support community, especially fish pond farmers, to adapt to climate change.
