Strengthening Waste Management, UNNES Students Actively Involved in Developing a Waste Bank Profile Book with BINTARI Foundation

Community-based waste management is a crucial step toward creating a clean and sustainable urban environment. Waste Banks serve as community-driven hubs that encourage residents to sort and manage waste independently at the neighborhood level, including RT, RW, and sub-districts. As a form of documentation of the conditions, activities, and development of Waste Banks in Semarang City, this Waste Bank Profile Book has been compiled. The document serves as an official record highlighting the role of communities in contributing to waste reduction and the promotion of environmentally friendly behavior.

The Waste Bank Profile Book was prepared in digital format as an institutional data document containing comprehensive information on 13 Waste Banks in Semarang City. These Waste Banks are fostered by BINTARI Foundation in partnership with PT Indofood, with data collection supported by Environmental Science students from UNNES participating in an internship program. The book presents detailed profiles of each Waste Bank, including organizational identity, establishment history, organizational structure, number of active members, types of waste managed, and operational activities. It also includes documentation of activities that have been implemented, such as community outreach, participation in waste management competitions, handicraft training, and other forms of environmental education. The entire content is compiled in a concise, informative, and consistent manner to serve as a reference for future program evaluation and development.

The preparation of the book was carried out through several structured stages, beginning with the collection of primary data through direct interviews with the management of each Waste Bank. Field observations were also conducted to record the actual condition of facilities and daily operational workflows, as well as to ensure that the descriptions accurately reflected on-the-ground realities. The collected data were subsequently analyzed and harmonized to produce an accurate, consistent, and representative information mapping for each Waste Bank.

This profile book serves as an official documentation base that records the institutional characteristics, community activities, and performance achievements of each supported Waste Bank. It is designed as a standardized data archive, a foundation for administrative reporting, and a reference for strategic planning in community-based waste management. Presented in digital format, the book can be updated periodically, is easily accessible and shareable, and functions as a documentation model that can be replicated in other regions to support the development of a sustainable waste management culture.
