Mangrove Campaign to Secure The Coastal Communities Living Space

PEKALONGAN – To secure costal communities living space, BINTARI invites fishermen and shrimp farmers group to increase planting and maintenance of mangroves. The Mangrove planting and maintenance campaign was carried out from 4-9 November 2024 in Wonokerto Kulon, Pecakaran, Semut, Api-Api and Tratebang Villages. A total of 106 participants attended the campaigns representing village officials, fishermen, shrimp farmers, women leaders, and youth groups. These activities are intended to increase community participation in planting and maintaining mangroves.

Mangrove campaign Coordinator of BINTARI Foundation, Amalia Al Khasanah led the campaign and distributed posters to the community. She hopes the campaign messages will be passed on to their family, neighbors, and other group members.

“We hope that the community can increase participation by planting and maintaining mangroves, preventing illegal logging, and reducing excessive use of chemicals for cleaning ponds. Let's increase planting and maintaining mangroves so that we can reduce sea flooding," said Amalia in her speech.

Many participants shared the condition of their homes after being inundated by seawater. Participants welcomed the campaign and allowed their pond areas to be planted with mangroves.

“I support this campaign. I am willing to have my pond planted with mangroves to prevent from errosion along the embankment. I will also invite the Wonokerto pond association to jointly protect and participate in this action," said Wahroji, Chairman of the Wonokerto Pond Association.

This mangrove campaign is part of the Coastal Conservation Program by regenerating Indonesian mangrove forests and introducing sustainable aquaculture, a collaboration program between BINTARI and Friends of Earth Japan supported by the Japan Fund for Global Environment. (AK)
