Reducing Single-Use Plastic Waste, the Plasma-B Program Conducts Education Activities and Distributes Reusable Tumblers, Water Dispensers, and Gallons at SDN 250 Central Maluku

Central Maluku, 19 November 2025 – The PLASMA-B Program (Protecting Biodiversity in the Central Maluku Region through Plastic Waste Management) is an initiative of the Bina Karta Lestari Foundation, implemented in collaboration with the local organization Toma Majo Lease, with funding support from UK OCEAN. The program aims to address plastic pollution issues that threaten both terrestrial and marine ecosystems in Central Maluku. Plastic waste, particularly when poorly managed in coastal villages and small island communities, poses a serious threat to biodiversity, especially to endemic species and conservation areas.

The PLASMA-B Program conducted environmental education activities at SDN 250 Central Maluku as part of its efforts to raise awareness among elementary school students about the importance of reducing single-use plastic waste, practicing waste segregation from an early age, and understanding the negative impacts of waste on both human health and the environment.

The outreach activity was attended by students, teachers, and school representatives, with the aim of increasing awareness of the importance of waste management from an early age. During the education session, the PLASMA-B team introduced the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), emphasized the importance of reducing single-use waste, and explained how to separate organic and inorganic waste. In addition, students were encouraged to understand the negative impacts of plastic waste on the environment, human health, and marine ecosystems in Maluku.

In addition to receiving educational materials, the students also took part in interactive sessions such as watching educational videos together, participating in quizzes, and playing hands-on games focused on waste sorting. The use of visual approaches and educational games helped participants more easily understand the key messages of the activity.

To encourage and support the reduction of single-use plastic waste, the PLASMA-B Program distributed reusable drinking bottles to students. In addition, the school received water dispensers and refillable gallon containers to enable students to refill their drinking water while at school. This initiative is expected to help reduce single-use plastic waste, starting from the school environment.

“I hope that this educational activity can increase students’ knowledge about waste. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to the BINTARI Foundation for providing education and support through the distribution of reusable tumblers, water dispensers, and gallon containers to both students and the school,” said Ms. Takaria, Principal of SDN 250 Central Maluku, Negeri Ouw.
